Description

This unit examines important aspects of teaching English as an additional language or dialect to primary aged children from diverse cultural and language backgrounds. Students will explore how to investigate and respond to the communicative and linguistic needs of these children, considering their cultural, social, language and educational backgrounds when planning, teaching and assessing English.

Prerequisite Rule

Must have passed WPL6115 and LAN6240

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Successfully deliver a learning sequence which caters for EAL/D learning in a primary school context, with consideration of relationships of English to first language and/or other languages, including dialects.
  2. Investigate and analyse the relationships between languages and the diversity of sociocultural and educational backgrounds of EAL/D students to design, deliver, assess and evaluate effective primary English learning programs
  3. Analyse student learning data to make informed decisions about EAL/EAD-responsive classroom practice aligned with evidence-based assessment principles and methods in a primary school context.
  4. Critically evaluate current policies and support services for EAL/D learners in an Australian and/or international primary school context
  5. Critically reflect on strategies to support EAL/D students' language learning in primary school settings.

  2. Planning for learning based on a needs analysis.
  3. Research methods.
  4. Current policies and resources related to children learning English as an additional language or dialect.
  5. Selection, use and evaluation of teaching and learning strategies.

Academic Integrity

This means that assessment tasks must be completed individually (unless it is an authorised group assessment task) and any sources used must be referenced.

Breaches of academic integrity can include:

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
