Description

This unit focuses on term and semester planning for the teaching of secondary English. It covers curriculum goals and content, text selection, program sequencing, and teaching strategies. Students will learn to interpret curriculum documents and develop programs of work that address the curriculum requirements and the developmental needs and abilities of secondary students. Core content topics and text types will be studied in detail to support the construction of teaching programs. Documents, materials and demonstrations in this unit will range across years 7 to 12 of secondary schooling.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate the current SCSA curriculum to inform and design lesson planning in Secondary English.
  2. Critically evaluate a range of strategies and resources (including ICT) to develop effective teaching and learning activities for a secondary English classroom.
  3. Critically evaluate learning programs to create a sequence of lessons informed by the secondary English curriculum.
  4. Critically analyse and create a range of assessment strategies and tools to assess, make consistent judgement and provide feedback on secondary English students’ knowledge and understanding.

  1. Lesson planning using SCSA curriculum.
  2. Teaching strategies and resources for secondary English.
  3. Lesson planning and sequencing.
  4. Create learning programs – forward planning documents.
  5. Formative and summative assessments techniques for secondary English.

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
