Description

This unit focuses on the teaching and assessment of senior secondary courses in Media Studies. Students will examine senior secondary curricula, review and interpret relevant examination requirements and policies, and develop the instructional skills needed to build effective programs of work for senior Media classes. Demonstrations and examples in the unit will relate to Years 11 and 12. This unit is reliant on the beginning teacher's previous film and television experience as it does not include practical tutorials.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Design appropriate assessment schedules for secondary Media studies.
  2. Evaluate and apply the major teaching strategies currentlly used in Media studies teaching.
  3. Evaluate the content and organisation of senior Western Australian syllabi for Media studies.
  4. Evaluate the language and concepts found in senior secondary Media courses.
  5. Manage the media abilities and interests of students in Years 11 and 12, and relate these to curriculum goals and content for Media studies.
  6. Plan effective longer term programs for teaching media theory and practice at the senior secondary level.

Unit Content

  1. Assessment principles and requirements, including the purposes and procedures of external examination.
  2. Content applicable to Year 11 and 12 media studies in Western Australia.
  3. Curriculum and syllabus documentation for senior secondary Media studies.
  4. Programming principles and techniques for senior secondary Media teaching.
  5. Teaching strategies for the study of communication, in relation to conceptual and process outcomes.
  6. Issues relevant to the planning and teaching of senior Media studies courses.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
