Description

This unit focuses on learner needs, the application of evidence-based second language teaching strategies and techniques, and the building the knowledge, skills and competencies needed for teaching bilingual and multilingual language learners. It introduces the foundations of teaching and assessing language proficiency in relation to listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Devise appropriate means to acquire the relevant information for the development of a language needs analysis of a group of learners.
  2. Analyse the needs of a group of learners taking into account the different factors that affect language learning.
  3. Select appropriate techniques and strategies from different methods and approaches to suit a specified group of learners.
  4. Apply relevant criteria in the evaluation of available language teaching/learning materials and in the development of resources to suit particular needs in a group of students.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of current policies, commercial and governmental resources and support for secondary-aged children for whom English is an additional language.
  6. Equip language learners with knowledge and skills necessary for effective self-monitoring of their learning of English and their learning of content knowledge through English.

  3. Development of teaching and assessment materials.
  4. Intercultural communication skills and competencies.
  5. Knowledge of language use and form.

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

  1. Demonstrate understanding of the key needs of English language learners.
  2. Select appropriate techniques, strategies, and teaching materials for an integrated skills lessons for a specified group of learners.
  3. Design a task-based learning experience to assess and develop the reading, writing, speaking or listening proficiency of secondary aged learners.
  4. Demonstrate the capacity to effectively engage in peer learning and reflect on learning.
