This unit is focused on the employment and industrial law in Australia. The unit introduces students to the following topics: identifying employment, common law of employment contracts, duties of employees and employers, legislation relating to Occupational Safety and Health, termination of employment, and discrimination. The statutory systems in relation to unfair dismissal, industrial action, freedom of association, right of entry and workers compensation will also be discussed.
This unit may be offered in Summer School.
Students must have passed LAW1100 or LAW1116.

This unit focuses on employment and industrial laws in Australia. Students will be introduced to contemporary legal challenges faced by modern workplaces in Australia. This unit will provide a global understanding of the laws that are applicable in the workplace. It seeks to highlight the difficulties that may be faced by all parties involved in employment relationships. It seeks to bring to fore the complexity of determining the role of parties within employment relationships; the legal duties imposed by legislation; and it seeks to compare workplaces which are governed by State and Federal laws. This unit will provide a working knowledge on employment matters for students who intending to pursue this area of study and move into HR practices.
