Description

This unit explores the foundations of linguistic knowledge from which the language teacher can help learners to develop and use their knowledge, skills and understandings about English and other languages. The unit includes a systematic introduction to knowledge about language in context and how this can be applied in adult and child educational contexts.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Explain and apply the structure and function of language in different contexts for a range of educational purposes.
  2. Analyse how language works: how it is used for different purposes in different contexts and how it is shaped by the field of discourse, relationship with the audience and medium of communication.
  3. Recommend and apply approaches to knowledge about language that can be used in a range of educational contexts to enhance language and literacy learning.
  4. Analyse and apply knowledge of how language works to different learning contexts.

Unit Content

  1. Phonology and the phoneme.
  2. Morphology.
  3. Lexis, including multi-word expressions and collocations.
  4. Semantics.
  5. Syntax.
  6. Pragmatics, including speech acts and dialogue.
  7. Language acquisition, and language and the brain.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
