Description

The focus of this unit is on the development of fundamental mathematics concepts in order to lay a foundation for ongoing learning. Students will examine the structure and content of the mathematics curriculum, particularly in the junior primary years. A range of teaching and learning strategies designed to promote learning and develop positive attitudes in mathematics will be introduced.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Access and use contemporary mathematics curriculum documents.
  2. Communicate, plan, implement and evaluate small group learning activities - orally and in written forms.
  3. Identify fundamental concepts and skills required for on-going mathematics learning.
  4. Monitor and evaluate their personal mathematical knowledge.
  5. Select and use appropriate strategies and resources for the teaching, learning and assessment of key mathematical concepts.
  6. Select and use strategies which will develop positive attitudes and promote learning in mathematics.

  1. Affective issues related to mathematics teaching and learning.
  2. Key understandings for primary mathematics
  3. Personal mathematical knowledge.
  4. Planning and delivery of small group activities
  5. Primary school mathematics curriculum content.
  6. Principles of oral and written communication in mathematics education.
  7. Strategies and resources for teaching key mathematical concepts.
