Description

In every area of business based professional activity ethics has assumed an increasingly important status. This unit is focussed around developing a critical awareness among prospective business professionals and student researchers as to the nature, function and importance of ethical issues across a broad range of business issues. The unit combines the study of the theoretical bases of ethics in the context of business related areas with discussion of real-life moral dilemmas through a case-study approach.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply fundamental ethical theories to appraise common ethical issues in the contemporary business context.
  2. Define the values which guide personal decision-making.
  3. Describe the nature and sources of ethical and moral standards.
  4. List the social and psychological factors which may affect moral decision-making.

Unit Content

  1. Business and cross-cultural Ethics.
  2. Corporate social responsibility.
  3. Developing the ethical organisation.
  4. Ethical dilemmas and decision-making.
  5. Ethical theories.
  6. Introduction to ethics and the business environment.
  7. Managing for ethical conduct: Common ethical challenges for managers and employees.
  8. What are values? Individual and corporate morality.

Additional Learning Experience Information

On-campus students attend a weekly three-hour seminar. Participation in both group and individual activities is a requirement, and has been built into the programme. Off campus students program is delivered via Blackboard. Regular online access is required to complete the assessment requirements of the unit.
