Description

This capstone unit provides students with experience in bringing together and applying the skills and knowledge acquired in previous units within the project management major. Under the general supervision of the lecturer, or academic mentor, each student will work in a designated team to collectively perform the management tasks required in all stages of a clearly defined project.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 1 units from MAN3716

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Create a project schedule.
  2. Create project baselines using appropriate software.
  3. Derive a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) for a given project brief.
  4. Determine when intervention is necessary to keep the project on-track.
  5. Estimate the duration and costs of activities in the WBS.
  6. Implement appropriate interventions.
  7. Monitor and report on project progress at appropriate intervals.
  8. Prepare documentation for the project close-out stage.

  1. Creating a project plan from a project brief.
  2. Final project reports.
  3. Integrating the project management knowledge areas.
  4. Tracking intervention outcomes.

Additional Learning Experience Information

This unit integrates the knowledge areas, skills and attributes acquired in studying previous units in the project management major. Students perform the role of project manager in a simulation based on a current or recently completed project. The lecturer performs the role of the project board in providing an initial description of the project as well as the approximate budget and timeframe. Student project managers plan the project, produce appropriate documentation and obtain approvals before work commences. In the directing phase, students use task completion and progress reports to update their baseline schedule as well as proposing responses to randomly allocated variations to plan which are communicated to them weekly by the lecturer. The last phase of the project requires the preparation of a final project report in which students can demonstrate their critical thinking abilities. This student-centred process allows for frequent guidance and feedback, develops workplace-applicable technical and software skills and allows students to practice project management in a supportive, controlled environment. The assessment requirements ensure that they engage in reflective team processes.
