Description

This unit focuses on entrepreneurship, its importance in the economic system, and on the skills and knowledge required to be a successful entrepreneur. Specific issues covered include: defining and understanding entrepreneurship; opportunity recognition and exploitation, developing viable business models; competitive advantage, marketing strategies and financing options; and forms of business ownership. The importance of entrepreneurial activity in promoting economic growth is also considered as is the relevance of entrepreneurial concepts to managing larger businesses. Participants will investigate entrepreneurship as an alternative career pathway. There will also be opportunities to investigate case studies and contemporary issues relevant to entrepreneurship.

Prerequisite Rule

Student must have completed a minimum of 120 credit points.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Explain the various challenges and issues associated with starting new ventures, including the challenges in researching and analysing business opportunities.
  2. Create a business model to convert an idea into a viable and sustainable venture.
  3. Apply relevant entrepreneurship knowledge, theory and skills to local and global business situations.
  4. Collaborate effectively in team settings to produce an entrepreneurial venture plan deploying entrepreneurial processes.
  5. Demonstrate the development of analytical skills, communication skills and entrepreneurial skills appropriate to pursuing a career as an entrepreneur.

Additional Learning Experience Information

The teaching and learning approach is student-centred and the unit uses a variety of technology tools to enhance the learning experience. There are online readings and activities as well as a mixture of face-to-face plenary and special topic sessions delivered by guest speakers. Facilitated workshops immerse students in project-based activities that simulate the entrepreneurial experience.

Academic Integrity

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
