Description

Project quality management describes the processes required to ensure that the project will satisfy the needs for which it was undertaken. There are three phases in this process: quality planning which includes identifying which quality standards are relevant to the project, determining how to satisfy them and how and when they'll be measured; quality assurance which involves periodic evaluation to ensure that project inputs and outcomes will satisfy the relevant quality standards; and, quality control which involves monitoring specific project results to ensure that they comply with the relevant quality standards while identifying ways to improve both product and process. Achieving planned levels of quality requires effective communication between team members and other stakeholders. Skills in managing relationships are critical in achieving stakeholder satisfaction through all stages of the project. This unit teaches the technical and soft skills required for managing project quality and provides students with an opportunity to discover how these skills are used in the workplace.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse project procurement quality issues in various project settings.
  2. Analyse project quality issues in various project settings (e.g. geographically distributed project team members, cultural differences).
  3. Argue the quality case for procurement choices (buy or build, single vs. multiple suppliers) in various project contexts.
  4. Design outputs that would contribute to the successful management of quality in a project.
  5. Develop strategies that encourage innovation and continuous improvement in project teams.
  6. Formulate inputs into the various project quality processes.
  7. Summarize the key factors impacting on project quality.
  8. Use appropriate tools and techniques for managing quality in these processes.

Additional Learning Experience Information

On-campus students attend a combination of seminar and laboratory experiences that cover three hours per week over one semester. Learning activities and assignments will develop communication and analytical abilities of students as well as providing opportunities to discover, discuss and apply theory in a meaningful context. Students studying in off campus mode will access the program via Blackboard and regular on line access is required. Students need to be actively engaged in the unit by reading the required readings, listening to any recorded lectures and participating in the review quizzes and exercises with answers that are posted on the Blackboard. An executive mode version may also be offered from time to time, based on four full day workshops, generally offered on Saturdays and/or Sundays. Assessment methods are designed to encourage and facilitate learning. They provide students with the opportunity to undertake independent off-campus research to determine how managing quality is achieved in the contemporary workplace and to analyse these practices. This provides exposure to the workplace, networking opportunities and community engagement.
