This capstone unit provides students with experience in synthesising and applying the skills and knowledge acquired in previous units within the Master of MIS. Students need to have completed at least eight relevant Units of study to enroll in this capstone project unit. In this unit the student completes a semester long industry project under the general supervision of the lecturer, or academic mentor. The student will develop context specific practical experience along with professional interpersonal and communications skills. The Australian Computer Society (ACS) has adopted the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA) and have created a Core Body of Knowledge (CBOK) to identify IT capabilities and knowledge. These frameworks have been used to inform the learning outcomes of this unit. The unit meets SFIA learning outcomes in the following: Data Analysis, Business Analysis. The unit is aligned with the ACS CBOK in the following. Assessed in assignment: Problem Solving (Abstraction, Design), Professional Knowledge (Ethics, Professionalism, Teamwork, Interpersonal Communications); Technology Resources (Hardware and Software, Data and Information Management); Technology Building (HCI, Systems Development, System Acquisition ), Outcomes Management (IT Project Management).

Students are expected to work on their project in a group. Students will find a suitable project subject to coordinator agreement. Projects are selected that provide the requisite breath of knowledge and integration necessary to meet desired learning outcomes. Students will undertake an ICT project related to the course content. In the first three weeks students will select and complete a project proposal. Seminars and/or online recordings will be given to establish the important ethical and professional aspects of practice, project management and quality principles. Following this introduction and proposal approval by the client and unit supervisor, students will conduct their project via independent study, with the student regularly reporting to, and consulting with, a project supervisor via email and/or face to face discussion. For off-campus students, online and paper-based materials (including recorded lectures) will be made available to establish the important aspects of professional practice, project management and quality principles. Students undertaking all projects will be required through assessments to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of project management, teamwork, ethics and communication skills.
