This capstone unit provides students with experience in synthesising and applying the skills and knowledge acquired in previous units within the Master of Project Management. Under the general supervision of the lecturer, or academic mentor, each student will either undertake an industry project or complete a provided case study. The unit will enable students to develop a broad range of work-related skills that will enhance their graduate capabilities. Students will not be paid for the work they undertake. Students will be required to have a credit average to participate in an industry project unless agreed otherwise by the unit coordinator. The unit must be taken in the last semester of the course.

Students are expected to work on their project in a group. Students need to agree with the unit coordinator whether they complete the case study or industry project. For those doing an industry project student groups will find and agree by the first week of semester a suitable project, which will be subject to coordinator agreement. In the first two weeks, 3 hour seminars or online recordings and face to face discussions will be given to allow completion of a project proposal. Lectures will establish the important ethical and professional aspects of practice, project management and quality principles. Following the completion of a client agreed and coordinator approved proposal students will conduct their project via independent study, with the student regularly reporting to, and consulting with, a project supervisor via email, face to face discussion and online project reporting. Off-campus students can join on campus groups. Online and paper-based materials (including recorded lectures) will be made available to establish the important aspects of professional practice, project management and quality principles. Regular online access is required.

Students are required to work on their project in a group. Students who are geographically remote or have other reasons why they cannot work in a team, need to negotiate this with the unit coordinator in the first week of the semester. Weekly on-campus workshops and online recordings will be provided to support students in completing the project proposal document. This will help to establish the important ethical and professional aspects of practice, project management and quality principles. Following the completion of the project initiation document, the teams will conduct their project via independent study, with each team assigned a workspace on Blackboard to upload weekly reports, record progress status, and other project reporting details. Online students can join on-campus groups in cases where the team is prepared to manage this complexity. The case study will make extensive use of online material posted on Blackboard both as baseline details and to inform students of updates to the project. Regular online access is therefore required for all students.
