Description

This unit provides an introduction to linear algebra, operations research, probability and their application to problems arising in applied contexts. Students will be introduced to the vectors, matrices, the solution of linear systems of equations, the formulation and solution of linear programming problems, network optimisation, continuous probability distributions and reliability analysis. This unit is designed for students who have passed ATAR Mathematics Methods or MAT1137 Introductory Applied Mathematics or equivalent.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have passed MAT1137 or must have achieved a scaled score >49.99 in ATAR Mathematics Methods or ATAR Mathematics Specialist or WACE MAT3C/3D or equivalent.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Identify and apply appropriate mathematics and statistics techniques to solve mathematical and statistical problems.
  2. Identify and apply appropriate mathematics and statistics techniques to solve applied problems.
  3. Make use of numeric computing packages to aid in understanding and solving problems in abstract and applied contexts.
  4. Communicate solutions to problems involving the application of mathematics and statistics techniques in a coherent written form.

Unit Content

  1. Linear Algebra – Vectors in Euclidean space (vector arithmetic); matrices (matrix algebra, determinants, eigenvectors and eigenvalues); solution of systems of linear equations; applications to applied problems (normal equation approach to linear regression).
  2. Operations Research – Formulation of a linear programming problem; the simplex method; sensitivity and duality; PERT.
  3. Statistics – Review of continuous random variables and the normal distribution; probability distributions from the exponential family; reliability of series and parallel systems and combination of these; modelling failure times with the exponential and Weibull distributions.
  4. Software – Use specified software to perform vector and matrix operations; solve linear programming problems and perform sensitivity analysis; carry out statistical analysis.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
