Description

This unit is designed to introduce students to the principles of statistical research methodology used within the field of Exercise and Sports Science. It will provide a brief introduction to statistics, sampling and survey design, and technical research reporting. The statistical software SPSS will be used where appropriate.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Collect, summarise, and present statistical data.
  2. Conduct basic statistical analyses using SPSS software.
  3. Design a research project based on a practical problem.
  4. Report statistical analyses and findings.
  5. Use an appropriate statistical methodology to analyse research data.

Unit Content

  1. Basic technical writing guidelines.
  2. Introduction to data presentation and analysis.
  3. Non-parametric techniques: chi-square test of independence, and procedures for rank-order data.
  4. Parametric techniques: linear regression and correlation analysis, two-sample t-tests, and analysis of variance (ANOVA).
  5. Reliability and validity.

Description

This unit is designed to introduce students to the principles of statistical research methodology used within the field of Exercise and Sports Science. It will provide a brief introduction to sampling, experimental and survey design, data analysis and statistics, qualitative methods, and technical research reporting. This unit aims to equip students with an understanding of the methods of data analysis used in the research process allowing them to make informed readings and critical evaluations of published research.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Describe the types and applications of quantitative and qualitative research study designs, and data collection techniques, commonly used in exercise and sport science.
  2. Perform statistical analysis and interpret the results in the context of exercise and sport science.
  3. Use primary databases to access peer-reviewed scientific literature, and conduct searches to identify relevant information, and cite the research appropriately.
  4. Critically appraise the research methodology, including study design, statistical analysis and ethical aspects, of research.
  5. Differentiate between high and lower quality sources of information to inform evidence based practice.

Unit Content

  1. Principles of research methods for exercise and sports science, including ethical and legal issues.
  2. Evaluation of exercise and sport science research.
  3. Research study design for quantitative and qualitative methods.
  4. Quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis techniques
  5. Introduction to data presentation and analysis.
  6. Statistical analysis techniques, including, linear regression and correlation analysis, two-sample t-tests, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) and non-parametric alternatives.
  7. Reliability, validity and reproducibility of experiments.
  8. Sample size estimation for qualitative and quantitative studies.
  9. Frameworks and methods for qualitative analysis.
  10. Reviewing exercise and sport science literature.
