Description

In this unit, students will develop essential statistical skills for analysing univariate data using intermediate statistical principles and methods. The unit emphasises practical application through hands-on experience with industry-standard statistical software including SPSS and/or R. Students will learn to select appropriate analytical techniques, implement analyses, interpret results, and communicate findings effectively. These skills are fundamental for data-driven decision making across various scientific disciplines and data analytics roles. The focus on both theoretical understanding and practical implementation prepares students for real-world data analysis challenges in research and industry settings.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Identify and apply the appropriate univariate statistical technique for a wide variety of data sets.
  2. Produce estimates and predictions based on regression models.
  3. Summarise the theories and principles of univariate statistical analysis.
  4. Interpret and summarise statistical analysis conducted with appropriate software.
  5. Identify and account for ethical and cultural issues related to designing a research project, gathering and storing data.

Unit Content

  1. Principles of study design.
  2. Testing of assumptions and post-hoc analysis.
  3. Analysis of Variance (factor, repeated measures, and co-variate)
  4. Analysis of linear regression models.
  5. Transformations and generalised linear models.
  6. Non-parametric and distribution-free statistics.
  7. Use of statistical software.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students will undertake a combination of lectures, tutorials/workshops. The lectures include presentation of motivating examples, along with theory and practical consideration in the application of the techniques. The workshops include self-paced work and students will learn to use statistical software packages. In addition, further examples are given in the tutorials and discussed with the class. The tutors will be on-hand to support and guide the students if required. Lecture and workshop recordings will be made available for online cohort. Assessments focus on the practical applications of statistical thinking and experimental design.

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
