Description

This unit involves the background research leading to the development of a proposal for the Mathematics Honours project. The unit includes coverage of topics to aid research: information technology; library resources; oral and written communication; and mathematics and statistics software tools.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically analyse relevant literature and develop a formal literature survey for a chosen research topic at the Honours level.
  2. Develop a formal research proposal at the Honours level.
  3. Effectively argue the value and importance of an Honours research topic and the appropriateness of proposed methodologies.
  4. Effectively identify and use information sources (books, journals, etc.) in the library.
  5. Present a research seminar.

Unit Content

  1. Critical analysis of literature as background reading for the project.
  2. Mathematics and Statistics Software Tools - Examples may include MATLAB, Excel, SPSS.
  3. Oral and written communication skills.
  4. The nature and scope of an Honours project.
  5. The structure of an Honours project proposal.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Initially the unit will be based on consultations between the student, the unit co-ordinator and potential supervisors. Following selection of a supervisor and topic of interest the student will consult with the supervisor regarding relevant literature, identification of the project, development of the proposal, presentation of the research seminar and the identification of special intellectual and practical skills the student will require. The student will also maintain contact with the unit co-ordinator.
