Description

This unit provides students with an opportunity to understand evidence-based practice and research methods as applied to midwifery practice. Using the principles of inquiry-based learning, students will examine research case studies in order to understand how clinical problems can be addressed and clinical knowledge expanded using research and evidence based practice. Student will then apply this understanding to a clinical scenario drawn from practice.

Co-Requisite Rule

Must be enrolled in course version I80, L68

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Advocate for a 'culture of inquiry' within a practice context.
  2. Critique how quality improvement processes are applied to midwifery care.
  3. Evaluate the alternative research approaches and identify the appropriate research method/s for specific clinical problems within the midwifery context.
  4. Explain the components of the systematic review process and examine review outcomes relevant to midwifery practice.

  1. Accessing, summarising and evaluating the quality of evidence.
  2. Critical appraisal skills.
  3. Data analysis techniques.
  4. Evaluating research for clinical relevance.
  5. Evidence base practice including accountability and clinical governance.
  6. Legal and ethical considerations in midwifery research.
  7. Research methods and data collection.
  8. Researchable questions.
  9. Writing a research proposal and report.
