This is the first workplace integrated learning unit in a series of seven clinical midwifery practice units. In this unit, students will be prepared for clinical midwifery practice settings and the conduct of continuity of care experiences through an intensive series of clinical skills workshops provided by the core midwifery teaching team in conjunction with a range of woman [person]-centred midwifery and allied maternity care associates. Students will have the opportunity to develop the knowledge, techniques and skills required by the professional midwife to perform comprehensive midwifery health assessments including the basic physical assessment of antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum women/birthing persons, and newborns. Beginning level clinical reasoning skills with a focus on woman-centred health assessment and management, symptom assessment, and promoting function are also developed in this unit.
Students will be required to undertake clinical practicum during the hours laid down by their host clinical agency and these may occur at times outside the identified semester weeks. Additionally, pre-identified clinical practicum periods may change with minimal notice to students due to circumstances outside the control of the School. Students are also required to conduct continuity of care experiences; these may occur outside of identified semester weeks.
Students must pass MIT1101.
Only students studying Bachelor of Science (Nursing)/Bachelor of Science (Midwifery) (Y76) can enrol in this unit.
Students must complete MIP1101 concurrently with MIT1102.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit information may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.

This means that assessment tasks must be completed individually (unless it is an authorised group assessment task) and any sources used must be referenced.
Breaches of academic integrity can include:
Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).
Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).
Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.
Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.
Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
