Description

This is the second workplace integrated learning unit in a series of six clinical midwifery practice units. In this unit students build on the clinical experience and competencies developed in the first practicum. In this unit, the focus is the Continuity of Midwifery model of maternity care. Students will be prepared for their exposure to Continuity of Midwifery practice settings through an intensive series of lectures and clinical skills workshops. A range of external maternity care University associates will be involved in students' learning. Students will have the opportunity to further develop the knowledge, techniques and skills required by the midwife. These include assessment of antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum women, and newborns. Clinical reasoning skills with a focus on a woman-centred approach are also developed in this unit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

1. Assume management of 15-30% of the Registered Midwife Workload appropriate to the setting.
2. Demonstrate competence relevant to a Stage 3 learner scope of practice in undertaking comprehensive woman-centred antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum and neonatal physical assessments relevant to midwifery practice in the health care setting and consistent with national and international standards.
3. Demonstrate competence relevant to a Stage 3 learner scope of practice in undertaking comprehensive women-centred antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum and neonatal physical assessments relevant to midwifery practice in the health care setting and consistent with national and international standards.
4. Distinguish between normal and abnormal maternal and neonatal health assessment findings.
5. Undertake woman-centred maternal mental health assessments.
6. Utilise health assessment instruments commonly used in clinical midwifery practice.

Unit Content

1. Abdominal palpation in pregnancy, intrapartum and postpartum, and the initial physical assessment of the newborn.
2. Clinical practice experience in a continuity of midwifery model.
3. Culturally competent and woman-centred maternal health assessment plus neonatal health assessment, and documentation.
4. Development of competence in relation to infant feeding with a focus on breastfeeding.
5. Maternal-newborn attachment.
6. Professionalism as a student midwife working in multidisciplinary teams with a focus on maternal and newborn referral pathways.
7. Taking maternal health histories.
8. The Continuity of Midwifery model of maternity care and revision of the role and scope of the midwife with reference to national and international philosophy statements, definitions and frameworks.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
