Description

This is the second workplace integrated learning unit in a series of six clinical midwifery practice units. In this unit students build on the clinical experience and competencies developed in the first practicum. In this unit, the focus is the Continuity of Midwifery model of maternity care. Students will be prepared for their exposure to Continuity of Midwifery practice settings through an intensive series of lectures and clinical skills workshops. A range of external maternity care University associates will be involved in students' learning. Students will have the opportunity to further develop the knowledge, techniques and skills required by the midwife. These include assessment of antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum women, and newborns. Clinical reasoning skills with a focus on a woman-centred approach are also developed in this unit. This unit is a designated unit, which means only one attempt is allowed. Failure of a designated unit may result in exclusion from the course.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Students will also be required to undertake clinical practicum during the hours laid down by their host clinical agency and that these may occur at times outside the identified semester weeks. Additionally, pre-identified clinical practicum periods may change with minimal notice to students due to circumstances outside the control of the School. Students are also required to conduct continuity of care experiences, these may occur outside of identified semester weeks.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

1. Undertake woman-centred maternal mental health assessments.
2. Distinguish between normal and abnormal maternal and neonatal health assessment findings.
3. Utilise health assessment instruments commonly used in clinical midwifery practice.
4. Assume management of 15-30% of the Registered Midwife Workload appropriate to the setting.
5. Demonstrate competence relevant to a Stage 3 learner scope of practice in undertaking comprehensive women-centred antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum and neonatal physical assessments relevant to midwifery practice in the health care setting and consistent with national and international standards.

Unit Content

1. The Continuity of Midwifery model of maternity care and revision of the role and scope of the midwife with reference to national and international philosophy statements, definitions and frameworks.
2. Taking maternal health histories.
3. Culturally competent and woman-centred maternal health assessment plus neonatal health assessment, and documentation.
4. Abdominal palpation in pregnancy, intrapartum and postpartum, and the initial physical assessment of the newborn.
5. Maternal-newborn attachment.
6. Development of competence in relation to infant feeding with a focus on breastfeeding.
7. Professionalism as a student midwife working in multidisciplinary teams with a focus on maternal and newborn referral pathways.
8. Clinical practice experience in a continuity of midwifery model.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

Additional Learning Experience Information

Online interactive learning activities, tutorials, workshops, practicum: 80 hrs, and at least 20 hours of CoCE.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit information may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
