Description

This is the fourth workplace integrated learning unit in a series of six clinical midwifery practice units. This unit focuses on the development of woman-centred midwifery skills in caring for women during labour and birth.Students will be prepared for their exposure to practice through an intensive series of lectures and clinical skills workshops provided by the core midwifery teaching team as well as a range of external maternity care associates. Students will develop the requisite skills for the facilitation of a sensitive, safe and emotionally satisfying birth experience within the mandatory legal, professional and ethical frameworks for midwifery.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Students will undertake clinical practicum during the hours laid down by their host clinical agency and that these may occur at times outside the identified semester weeks. Additionally, pre-identified clinical practicum periods may change with minimal notice to students due to circumstances outside the control of the School.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate clinical decisions in the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods using health assessment and reporting tools.
  2. Assume management of 30-60% of the Registered Midwife Workload appropriate to the setting.
  3. Demonstrate competence in the workplace setting in accordance with NMBA Competencies for the Registered Midwife relevant to a Stage 4 learner scope of practice and interdisciplinary team working principles.
  4. Promote the safe and effective care for women and the fetus/neonate during labour, birth and immediately postpartum in accordance with national and international midwifery philosophies, definitions and frameworks.
  5. Undertake a comprehensive woman-centred intrapartum assessment relevant to midwifery practice in the health care setting, taking account of specific ethnic and cultural considerations. Specific consideration will be given to the particular care needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander newborns and their families.

Unit Content

  1. Care of the second parent.
  2. Clinical practice experience in a maternity service and through continuity of care partnerships.
  3. Evidence-based woman-centred labour and birth care, including facilitation of woman-centred decision-making intrapartum.
  4. Intrapartum fetal surveillance.
  5. Non-pharmacological and pharmacological pain management options.
  6. Principles of culturally sensitive intrapartum care: evidence-based management of the first, second, third and fourth stages of labour and birth.
  7. Professionalism as a student midwife with a focus on collaborative interprofessional working and maternal referral pathways.
  8. Revision of the role and scope of the midwife in the intrapartum period with reference to national and international midwifery philosophies, definitions and frameworks.
  9. Supporting women to cope with the physiological, emotional and mental challenges of labour and birth.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Work done in an actual workplace in which the student applies discipline-specific knowledge and skills, supervised by an industry professional at an ECU campus or location.  

Additional Learning Experience Information

Online interactive learning activities, tutorials, workshops, 80 hours of clinical practice experience and at least 40 hours of CoCE.

Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
