Description

This is the fourth workplace integrated learning unit in a series of six clinical midwifery practice units. This unit focuses on the development of woman-centred midwifery skills in caring for women during labour and birth.Students will be prepared for their exposure to practice through an intensive series of lectures and clinical skills workshops provided by the core midwifery teaching team as well as a range of external maternity care associates. Students will develop the requisite skills for the facilitation of a sensitive, safe and emotionally satisfying birth experience within the mandatory legal, professional and ethical frameworks for midwifery. This unit is a designated unit, which means only one attempt is allowed. Failure of a designated unit may result in exclusion from the course.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Students will undertake clinical practicum during the hours laid down by their host clinical agency and that these may occur at times outside the identified semester weeks. Additionally, pre-identified clinical practicum periods may change with minimal notice to students due to circumstances outside the control of the School. Students are also required to conduct continuity of care experiences, these may occur outside of identified semester weeks.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Assume management of 30-60% of the Registered Midwife Workload appropriate to the setting.
  2. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate clinical decisions in the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods using health assessment and reporting tools.
  3. Undertake a comprehensive woman-centred intrapartum assessment relevant to midwifery practice in the health care setting, taking account of specific ethnic and cultural considerations. Specific consideration will be given to the particular care needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander newborns and their families.
  4. Promote the safe and effective care for women and the fetus/neonate during labour, birth and immediately postpartum in accordance with national and international midwifery philosophies, definitions and frameworks.
  5. Demonstrate competence in the workplace setting in accordance with NMBA Competencies for the Registered Midwife relevant to a Stage 4 learner scope of practice and interdisciplinary team working principles.

Unit Content

  1. Principles of culturally sensitive intrapartum care: evidence-based management of the first, second, third and fourth stages of labour and birth.
  2. Revision of the role and scope of the midwife in the intrapartum period with reference to national and international midwifery philosophies, definitions and frameworks.
  3. Evidence-based woman-centred labour and birth care, including facilitation of woman-centred decision-making intrapartum.
  4. Supporting women to cope with the physiological, emotional and mental challenges of labour and birth.
  5. Non-pharmacological and pharmacological pain management options.
  6. Care of the second parent.
  7. Intrapartum fetal surveillance.
  8. Professionalism as a student midwife with a focus on collaborative interprofessional working and maternal referral pathways.
  9. Clinical practice experience in a maternity service and through continuity of care partnerships.

Work done in an actual workplace in which the student applies discipline-specific knowledge and skills, supervised by an industry professional at an ECU campus or location.
