Description

This is the sixth and final workplace integrated learning unit in a series of six clinical midwifery practice units. Students will be prepared for their final practice experience through an intensive series of lectures and clinical skills workshops provided by the core midwifery teaching team in conjunction with a range of woman-centred midwifery and allied maternity care associates. This practicum unit will provide students with the opportunity to practice applied evidence-based midwifery across the entire childbearing continuum and the spectrum of maternal and neonatal needs. Students will continue to develop the requisite skills to provide sensitive, safe, supportive, woman-centred and culturally appropriate midwifery care within the mandatory legal, professional and ethical frameworks for midwifery, within an interdisciplinary context. and with reference to national/international midwifery philosophies, definitions and frameworks. Students will provide evidence-based care and further refine their clinical skills in selected health care settings.

Students must pass 2 units from MIP4209, MIT4101

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate competence in appropriate interdisciplinary consultation and referral in situations of normal and abnormal midwifery findings employing evidence-based diagnostic reasoning / decision-making skills.
  2. Demonstrate competence in the workplace setting in accordance with the NMBA Competencies for the Registered Midwife relevant to a final stage learner scope of practice.
  3. Discuss self-care strategies to develop resilience in the midwifery workplace.
  4. Independently undertake comprehensive women centred assessments and culturally appropriate care across the childbearing continuum relevant to midwifery practice with reference to national/international midwifery philosophies, definitions and frameworks.
  5. Undertake the management of 80-100% of the Registered Midwife workload appropriate to the setting.

  1. Clinical practice experience in a maternity service and through continuity of care partnerships.
  2. Clinical workload management approaches.
  3. Collaborative, interdisciplinary woman-centred maternity care.
  4. Diagnostic reasoning and cultural sensitivity in midwifery practice.
  5. Maternal referral pathways.
  6. Scope and practice of the midwifery role across the childbearing continuum in the context of national/international midwifery philosophies, definitions and frameworks.
  7. Work-life balance and self-care.

Learning Experience

WIL - Internship, Clinical or Professional placement (on-campus)

Work done in an actual workplace in which the student applies discipline-specific knowledge and skills, supervised by an industry professional at an ECU campus or location.  

Additional Learning Experience Information

Online interactive learning activities, tutorials, workshops, 160 hours of clinical practice experience and a minimum of 40 hours of CoCE.

Students will provide evidence-based care and further refine their clinical skills in selected health care settings. This unit is a designated unit, which means only one attempt is allowed. Failure of a designated unit may result in exclusion from the course.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

This unit will be delivered in a two week block period at the commencement of the semester. Students will also be required to undertake clinical practicum during the hours laid down by their host clinical agency and that these may occur at times outside the identified semester weeks. Additionally, pre-identified clinical practicum periods may change with minimal notice to students due to circumstances outside the control of the School. Students are also required to conduct continuity of care experiences, these may occur outside of identified semester weeks.
