Description

This is the sixth and final workplace integrated learning unit in a series of six clinical midwifery practice units. Students will be prepared for their final practice experience through an intensive series of lectures and clinical skills workshops provided by the core midwifery teaching team in conjunction with a range of woman-centred midwifery and allied maternity care associates. This practicum unit will provide students with the opportunity to practice applied evidence-based midwifery across the entire childbearing continuum and the spectrum of maternal and neonatal needs. Students will continue to develop the requisite skills to provide sensitive, safe, supportive, woman-centred and culturally appropriate midwifery care within the mandatory legal, professional and ethical frameworks for midwifery, within an interdisciplinary context. and with reference to national/international midwifery philosophies, definitions and frameworks. Students will provide evidence-based care and further refine their clinical skills in selected health care settings. This unit is a designated unit, which means only one attempt is allowed. Failure of a designated unit may result in exclusion from the course.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Students will also be required to undertake clinical practicum during the hours laid down by their host clinical agency and that these may occur at times outside the identified semester weeks. Additionally, pre-identified clinical practicum periods may change with minimal notice to students due to circumstances outside the control of the School. Students are also required to conduct continuity of care experiences, these may occur outside of identified semester weeks.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate competence in appropriate interdisciplinary consultation and referral in situations of normal and abnormal midwifery findings employing evidence-based diagnostic reasoning / decision-making skills.
  2. Independently undertake comprehensive women centred assessments and culturally appropriate care across the childbearing continuum relevant to midwifery practice with reference to national/international midwifery philosophies, definitions and frameworks.
  3. Undertake the management of 80-100% of the Registered Midwife workload appropriate to the setting.
  4. Discuss self-care strategies to develop resilience in the midwifery workplace.
  5. Demonstrate competence in the workplace setting in accordance with the NMBA Competencies for the Registered Midwife relevant to a final stage learner scope of practice.

  2. Scope and practice of the midwifery role across the childbearing continuum in the context of national/international midwifery philosophies, definitions and frameworks.
