Description

This unit provides the student with the opportunity to further develop and demonstrate midwifery competencies in a variety of settings including, complex maternity care environments. Students will work toward fulfilling the role of the midwife in a multidisciplinary health care team in the delivery of high quality maternity care. Students will practice and function in accordance with legislation and common law affecting midwifery practice and utilise a critical, clinical decision-making approach to provide safe, competent, confident midwifery care for the childbearing family at the level of a beginning practitioner. This is a designated unit, which means only one attempt is allowed.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

1. Apply evidence-based knowledge and skill in meeting the needs of individuals and groups throughout all phases of the childbearing continuum.
2. Utilise critical thinking skills in the planning, implementation and the evaluation of safe, midwifery care that meets the bio-psycho-social and cultural needs of childbearing families who are at risk of or who have developed complications.
3. Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication skills as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
4. Demonstrate the principles of accountability and ethical practice in the provision of maternity care in complex situations.
5. Participate in midwifery's professional activities.

Unit Content

1. Communication within the multidisciplinary context.
2. Care of women with consideration of their cultural perspectives.
3. Loss, grief and unexpected outcomes.
4. Critical thinking skills that enable reasoned responses to complexities in midwifery.
5. Collaborative practice in multi-disciplinary maternity services.
6. Assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of midwifery care in complex situations.
7. Health promotion and safety in complex situations in midwifery.
8. Appropriate use of technology and management of obstetric emergencies.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECUs LMS

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students will undertake a variety of learning styles. They will undertake online modules, whereby there will be lectures, quizzes, readings and videos. On campus the students will attend tutorials, workshops and clinical skills. The students will also be expected to undertake Continuity of Care Experiences. Plus 288 hours professional clinical practice experience.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
