Description

This unit facilitates the transition from the role of midwifery student to that of Registered Midwife. Emphasis is placed on factors that contribute to the scope of practice of Registered Midwives in Australia. Skills for initial employment including role-relevant competence in leadership and management, as well as the obligations in maintaining registration and professional competence, are also included.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass MIP3101.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Construct a professional competence/development plan.
  2. Construct an application for an employment position that utilises sound argument and is supported by evidence.
  3. Develop a personal plan of entry to practice for the graduate registered midwife.
  4. Evaluate the professional, corporate and clinical governance structures and the national and international midwifery philosophies, definitions and frameworks, that define the role of the Registered Midwife.
  5. Examine the challenges and strategies for managing role transition for the novice Registered Midwife.

  1. 'Reality shock' and reflective practice.
  2. Changing roles in midwifery.
  3. Continuing competence & performance appraisal.
  4. Framing and substantiating an argument of competence.
  5. Midwifery job applications, CV writing, interview skills.
  6. Professional development and specialisation.
  7. Professional, corporate and clinical governance structures and national/international midwifery philosophies, definitions and frameworks that define the role of the Registered Midwife.

Students will engage in learning experiences via ECU’s LMS as well as additional ECU learning technologies

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
