Description

This unit provides midwifery students with an opportunity to further develop their understanding of screening and diagnostic tests relevant to the care for childbearing women. This unit will provide graduates with the knowledge and skills to ensure women are aware of options for antenatal screening and advocate and support women in making informed decisions about antenatal screening and diagnostics tests available to them during their pregnancy.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically analyse investigations and diagnostics used in evidence based midwifery practice.
  2. Apply advanced assessment skills to gather information to order investigations for diagnostic testing.
  3. Apply decision making from information obtained and order investigations and diagnostic testing.
  4. Communicate decisions as instructions to generate correct order (NMBA 2011, p14.).
  5. Monitor and review practice (NMBA 2011, P14). The midwife will monitor effectiveness of own practice and outcomes for the mother and infant.
  6. Reflect midwifery responsibilities when requesting screening or diagnostic requests.
  7. Interpret the legal and professional frameworks relating to investigations and diagnostics in midwifery practice.

  2. Clinical assessment and decision making.
  3. Ethics and legalities of ordering investigations and diagnostics.
  4. Legal and professional boundaries relating to investigation and diagnostics.

Students will engage in learning experiences through ECU Blackboard as well as additional ECU learning technologies.
