Description

This unit provides midwives with an opportunity to further develop their understanding of screening and diagnostic tests relevant to the care of childbearing women. This unit will provide graduates with the knowledge and skills to ensure women are aware of options for antenatal screening and advocate and support women in making informed decisions about antenatal screening and diagnostics tests available to them during their pregnancy.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Applyevidence-basedmidwifery practice todevelop a diagnostic and investigations plan in partnership with the woman andcommunicate this planwith other health professionals asnecessary.
  2. Demonstratecomprehensive knowledge ofethical investigations and diagnosticscreening across the continuum of midwiferypractice.
  3. Demonstrate the capacity to autonomously order and act on screening and diagnostic tests according to applicable legislation,regulationsand policies.
  4. Reflectand interpret the midwife’sresponsibilities when requesting screening or diagnostic requestsin regard tothe legal and professional frameworks in relation toinvestigations and diagnostics inmidwifery practice.

  2. Clinical assessment and decision making.
  3. Ethics and legalities of ordering investigations and diagnostics.
  4. Legal and professional boundaries relating to investigation and diagnostics.

Students will engage in learning experiences via ECU’s LMS as well as additional ECU learning technologies

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

All commencing ECU students are required to complete the Academic Integrity Module.

Assessment Extension

Special Consideration
