Description

This unit introduces students to a variety of analytical tools and software products currently used to manage and measure marketing data. The emphasis is not on formulae, but to identify and obtain sources of marketing data (both offline and online), and then investigate that data for marketing insights through various techniques such as survey data analysis, regression analysis, text analytics, market basket analysis, cluster analysis, sales forecasting, and data visualisation and storytelling. The unit also covers the concepts, methods and applications of decision models around the collection and use of data, as well as emerging fields of marketing analytics such as big data and artificial intelligence. Students will learn how to think as marketers by asking questions of their data, setting their own direction for the analysis and recommending to businesses on how to use the results to improve overall business performance.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have passed either: SBL1300 OR MKT1600 OR SPM2510 OR SPM2610 before enrolling into this unit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Appraise the use of data informed marketing insights in business practices from an ethical, privacy and socially responsible perspective.
  2. Generate innovative business opportunities and ideas from marketing data analyses.
  3. Analyse marketing datasets using a variety of technologies, tools and techniques.
  4. Communicate marketing insights through data visualisation and storytelling to both specialist and non-specialist audiences to inform business decisions.

  4. Bivariate statistical analysis: tests of association.

  6. Market basket analysis.

  8. Forecasting and trend analysis.
  9. Automated machine learning and neural network.
  10. Text analytics.
  11. Data visualisation and storytelling.
  12. Ethical and privacy issues in marketing analytics.

Informal vivas may be conducted as part of an assessment task, where staff require further information to confirm the learning outcomes have been met. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant School Progression Panel.

Academic Integrity

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
