Description

This subject provides students with an introduction to research methods, research proposal writing and developing ethics applications. It also includes an introduction to epidemiology and study types, developing research questions, reviewing the literature, analysis of the literature, and developing a research proposal. Students will also be introduced to writing ethics applications.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse research evidence, identifying biases and assessing the impact of research methodology upon study results.
  2. Evaluate the rigour of research methods used when producing published literature to make judgements about the accuracy or bias influencing the information.
  3. Apply knowledge of research methodology and biostatistics to evaluate research literature identifying evidence gaps and areas for potential research.
  4. Demonstrate responsibility and high level organisation skills through planning and preparation of clinical or biostatistic research gaps analysis.

  1. Introduction to evidence-based practice.
  2. Study types and research design.
  3. The Cochrane Collaboration and systematic reviews.
  4. Developing an answerable research question.
  5. Conducting a literature review.
  6. Ethical considerations in research.
  7. Writing a research proposal.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
