Description

This unit will introduce theory and laboratory practice that is essential to the medical scientist working in the field of clinical haematology. Policies, procedures, documentation, reporting and safety regulations are reviewed as part of the standard operation of a pathology laboratory.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Determine the administration required for processing requests and the dissemination of the results for laboratory haematological investigations.
  2. Explain the biological basis of the normal function of the haemopoietic system.
  3. Perform a range of standard haematological investigations and interpret the results based on current Australian clinical practice guidelines.
  4. Recommend the use of appropriate work place health and safety regulations relevant to a clinical pathology laboratory.

Unit Content

  1. Clinical indications and features of basic haematological investigations.
  2. Methodologies in haematological investigations.
  3. Models of workplace health and safety regulations pertaining to laboratory conditions including hazardous substances and dangerous goods.
  4. Normal haemopoietic function.
  5. The role of Safe Work Australia and regulatory bodies.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Lectures, interactive tutorials, research seminars and laboratory sessions. Focus will be on the development of laboratory practical skills, and independent critical thinking to facilitate practice in a diagnostic laboratory environment. Students will be allocated a research topic, which they will prepare and present to the class in seminars.
