Description

In this final-year unit, students gain work experience that aligns with their chosen field of biomedical science specialisation, to broaden their industry networks and develop graduate capabilities. Students may undertake a range of supervised activities in clinical, laboratory, professional or simulated settings, to build familiarity with authentic workplace environments, apply critical thinking to assist decision-making and further develop discipline knowledge and capabilities. Through the portfolio assessments, students develop a record of their work capabilities which can then be used for future career development. Students are expected to work independently, use initiative and communicate with colleagues in professional and ethical ways. Students are required to take full responsibility for their own learning, time management, outcomes and achievements in this unit.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Students will undertake their placement at times convenient to the host organisation, which may occur outside the identified standard university semester or regular hours, and the student will be supervised primarily by the host organisation. Additionally, pre-identified placement periods may change with minimal notice to students due to circumstances outside the control of the School.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must complete 240 credit points in their current course of study before attempting this unit.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply discipline knowledge, theory, and skills in authentic biomedical science workplace settings.
  2. Use a range of oral, written and interpersonal communication skills to effectively collaborate with people in diverse workplace environments.
  3. Work in responsible, accountable, and ethical ways in clinical, laboratory and diverse biomedical science environments.
  4. Critically reflect upon personal capabilities, decisions, and workplace experiences to enhance ongoing professional practice.

Unit Content

  1. Pre-placement planning.
  2. Risk assessment.
  3. Reflective practice.
  4. Professional and effective communication.

Additional Learning Experience Information

This unit requires students to complete a minimum of 100 hours of placement within a public, private, not-for-profit or simulated workplace. Host supervisors and the Unit Coordinator will discuss and negotiate student learning objectives and will support students during their placement experience. Students are responsible for completing and submitting a range of compulsory pre-placement requirements in a portfolio format a minimum of 4-weeks prior to a placement offering being available. Pre-placement requirements may include risk management and insurance documentation, background checks and clearances (e.g. police clearances, working with children checks) and obtaining any required vaccinations or medical clearances. Pre- placement requirements must be completed and submitted within the defined timeframes to be offered a placement opportunity and to be eligible to pass the unit. During the placement, students will maintain a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates their learning achievements, capability development and evidence of their placement experiences. Students will engage in reflective practice to review their placement and highlight areas of development for the future and will be assessed on their portfolio of evidence, supervision reports and placement reflection upon completion of the practicum experience.

Assessment

Academic Integrity

Integrity is a core value at Edith Cowan University, and it is expected that ECU students complete their assessment tasks honestly and with acknowledgement of other people's work as well as any generative artificial intelligence tools that may have been used. This means that assessment tasks must be completed individually (unless it is an authorised group assessment task) and any sources used must be referenced.

Breaches of academic integrity can include:

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

ECU's policies and more information about academic integrity can be found on the student academic integrity website.

All commencing ECU students are required to complete the Academic Integrity Module.

Assessment Extension

In some circumstances, Students may apply to their Unit Coordinator to extend the due date of their Assessment Task(s) in accordance with ECU's Assessment, Examination and Moderation Procedures - for more information visit https://askus2.ecu.edu.au/s/article/000001386.

Special Consideration

Students may apply for Special Consideration in respect of a final unit grade, where their achievement was affected by Exceptional Circumstances as set out in the Assessment, Examination and Moderation Procedures - for more information visit https://askus2.ecu.edu.au/s/article/000003318.
