Description

This unit forms the foundation of the Graduate Diploma in Aeromedical Retrieval. The unit incorporates a review of the retrieval services operating within WA, Australia and internationally. Particular focus is placed on retrieval services operating in challenging geographical territory. The unit introduces concepts which underpin a systematic approach to aeromedical retrieval, including key topics such as communications, prioritisation, aeromedical crew composition, tasking and logistics. Principles of clinical coordination and quality systems in aeromedical services are established.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Describe in advanced detail the history and philosophy of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and other major international aeromedical retrieval services.
  2. Report on the organisational structure of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and other major international aeromedical retrieval services.
  3. Appraise the range of funding arrangements available to aeromedical retrieval services.
  4. Construct in advanced detail retrieval solutions to meet patient needs and transport availability within retrieval services.
  5. Evaluate patient needs to prioritise assignment of aeromedical aircraft.
  6. Evaluate the different roles and levels of resources for nursing posts, district and regional hospitals, aeromedical retrieval services and their roles relevant to cross cultural and Indigenous patient care.

  1. The culture of aeromedical retrieval.
  2. Funding models and how they relate to aeromedical service retrieval services.
  3. Specification of aeromedical resources.
  4. Construction of advanced retrieval solutions.
  5. Allocation of aeromedical resources to patient needs.
  6. Indigenous and cross cultural awareness in aeromedical retrieval.

Learning Experience

Students will engage in learning experiences through ECU Blackboard as well as additional ECU learning technologies.
