Description

This is a core clinical unit for the Graduate Diploma in Aeromedical Retrieval. This unit has a strong focus on the clinical aspects of medical retrieval in an aeromedical context. Physiological effects of the aviation environment are combined with an understanding of pathological processes to enable appropriate decisions to be made about the aeromedical retrieval and inflight management of a broad range of clinical conditions. These include the clinical management of trauma, cardiac, respiratory, gastrointestinal, obstetric, paediatric, infectious and mental health patients in an airborne setting.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Review the basic principles of patient transport and retrieval.
  2. Predict and respond correctly to common medical problems that can arise during transport and retrieval.
  3. Prepare for common diagnoses encountered in the air transport of patients.
  4. Appraise potential problem areas and risks with selected types of aeromedical cases.
  5. Prioritise across a broad range of patient medical conditions to determine the most critical cases.
  6. Prescribe appropriate in-flight management for patients suffering from common medical conditions.

Unit Content

  1. Principles of aeromedical retrieval.
  2. Principles of patient transport.
  3. Clinical diagnoses.
  4. Problems, risks, risk minimisation and solutions associated with retrieval operations.
  5. Medical conditions likely to be encountered.
  6. Design, preparation and management of patients for aeromedical retrieval.
