Description

In this unit, students will investigate a range of current issues in the medical sciences. Topics include oncogenesis, advances in the neurosciences with a focus of the brain in health and disease, and topical issues such embryo experimentation and bioethics.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate advances in medical and health science research to inform further research outcomes.
  2. Communicate an advanced understanding of medical and health science research demonstrating a coherent argument for a research topic.
  3. Formulate coherent responses to complex medical and health science research scenarios.

Unit Content

  1. Cancer genetics, the clonal nature of cancer and oncogenesis.
  2. Advances in the understanding of human diseases.
  3. Current advances in the neurosciences.
  4. Application of new methodologies in brain research.
  5. Contentious issues in the medical sciences.

Learning Experience

ON-CAMPUS

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Students will engage in learning experiences through ECU Blackboard as well as additional ECU learning technologies.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Lectures, seminars, directed reading. Visiting lecturers or research fellows as appropriate to the topic. Online students will present a their seminars either on-campus or using an online software (such as Blackboard collaborate) in consultation with their supervisor and unit coordinator.
