Description

This unit expands on MMS5102 covering advanced clinical management of patients during aeromedical retrieval. Through evaluation of case scenarios, student focus is on more complex clinical presentations including patients with sepsis, respiratory failure and major trauma who require inotropic and ventilatory support. Capabilities in patient resuscitation, preparation of patients for retrieval and clinical procedural skills are developed through simulation training.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply basic and advanced life support protocols to adult and paediatric patients.
  2. Appraise common cardiac arrhythmias and their medical management in a pre-hospital setting.
  3. Plan and organise an aeromedical retrieval for patients suffering multiple trauma.
  4. Determine the circumstances under which to use advanced resuscitation interventions.
  5. Decide when to use essential resuscitation skills in an aircraft environment.
  6. Critically review contemporary research literature pertaining to key aspects of aeromedical retrieval medicine.
  7. Plan and write a case study.

Unit Content

  1. Systematic approach to basic and advanced life support in the aeromedical retrieval setting.
  2. Systematic approach to the on-scene assessment of patients in the pre-hospital environment.
  3. Advanced clinical diagnosis, treatment and care of patients suffering multiple trauma.
  4. Advanced clinical diagnosis, treatment and care including resuscitation procedures of patients with particular emphasis on two of the following: patients suffering from neurological, gastrointestinal or mental health conditions; envenoming or infectious disease; or conditions specific to obstetric, paediatric or neonate patients.
  5. Research skills specific to the review of literature, and the planning and implementation of a case study.
