Description

This unit investigates a range of sophisticated methods used in the diagnosis, staging, and treatment of cancer, such as diagnostic imaging, laboratory testing, patient assessment and the TNM staging system (tumor, node, metastasis). Students will analyse surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy as cancer treatments and examine a range of other treatments including immune, hormone and precision medicine methods.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate the impact of cancer classification and staging upon the prognosis and treatment of cancer.
  2. Communicate an understanding of oncology treatment goals within multidisciplinary teams to support cancer patient care.
  3. Synthesise knowledge of cancer symptoms, treatments and side effects to support the patient experience and inform professional practice.

Unit Content

  1. Histopathological classification and molecular testing.
  2. Systemic treatment route of administration and dosing regimes.
  3. Principles of TNM classification and staging.
  4. Imaging modalities and their uses.
  5. Patient assessment: performance status, symptoms and co-morbidities.
  6. Goals of cancer treatment: neoadjuvant, adjuvant, palliative.
  7. Importance of multidisciplinary approach.
  8. Surgical principles and side-effects.
  9. Radiotherapy techniques and side-effects.
  10. Systemic treatment types and side effects.

Learning Experience

Students will engage in learning experiences through ECU Blackboard as well as additional ECU learning technologies.

Additional Learning Experience Information

eLearning materials will be available via Blackboard and students are expected to login and complete learning activities during specific weeks. Collaborative discussion and presentations are used to build confidence in communicating with patients and clinicians about cancer treatment.
