Description

This holistic health assessment unit is designed to equip nurse practitioner students with the essential skills and knowledge required for obtaining an accurate patient health history and conduct an advanced physical assessment. The unit emphasises the importance of developing a systematic approach to patient evaluation by fostering critical thinking to enhancing diagnostic reasoning capabilities. Students will gain expertise in utilising evidence-based assessment tools to conduct physical and mental health evaluations in a Culturally Safe manner.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

There will be a mandatory three day on campus workshop for health assessment skills at the beginning of the semester and an Observed Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) at the end of the semester in the simulation laboratories at ECU, Joondalup campus.

Prerequisite Rule

Only students studying course L88 can enrol in this unit; an exception may be made for students studying course I52 (subject to acceptance by the course coordinator).

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate patient assessment findings to guide diagnostic reasoning in hypothesising the person's health status.
  2. Apply an advanced knowledge of human anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology to a focussed and comprehensive patient assessment.
  3. Utilise ethically and culturally sensitive clinical practices to conduct a health assessment in people with acute or chronic, physical, psychological, and social conditions.
  4. Analyse the use of a variety of nursing health assessment tools and frameworks related to health care technologies in patient care.
  5. Apply advanced nursing clinical decision making to sequence a holistic patient assessment.

Unit Content

  1. Application of human anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology.
  2. Completion of a comprehensive health history in the context of holistic health care, including biophysical, psychological, environmental and socio-cultural influences on health and wellness of an individual.
  3. The systematic approach and context of patient health assessment.
  4. Medication reconciliation as a component of comprehensive history taking.
  5. Assessment tools used to monitor and evaluate patient progress.
  6. Clinical reasoning and documentation of patient findings.
  7. Clinical decision making to distinguish the need for a comprehensive versus focused patient assessment.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit information may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.

Academic Integrity

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
