Description

Students will be assisted to plan and develop modules of work appropriate for children in a year level of their choice. Particular attention will be paid to commercially produced mathematics and science support documents available to K-3 teachers. Opportunities will also be provided for students to explore, construct and assess science learning centres and to develop appropriate materials and strategies to assist parents to work effectively as partners in the teaching of mathematics in the early years of school.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Confidently plan and develop appropriate mathematics and science modules for a particular group of children in their early years of schooling.
  2. Explain the ways in which a variety of commercial and teacher-made teaching aids might be used to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics and science.
  3. Make informed decisions about the suitability or otherwise of commercially produced mathematics and science support documentation.
  4. Select and provide appropriate content, contexts and materials to support the learning of mathematics and science and apply effective evaluative strategies to assess learning outcomes.
  5. Work effectively with teacher aides and parents as partners in the mathematical development of the children.

Unit Content

  1. Develop a science learning centre suitable for use with students from a selected year level K-3.
  2. Develop materials to support teacher assistants or parents working with children in mathematics classrooms.
  3. Develop strategies for the involvement of parents and assistants in the teaching program.
  4. Investigate current Education Department of W.A. curriculum documents in both mathematics and science.
  5. Thoroughly examine and evaluate commercially produced support materials in the light of current W.A. curriculum expectations.
