Description

This unit provides an overview of the media in Asia with a focus on China, India, Japan and Indonesia. In each country the introduction, development and regulation of the various media and cultural impact will be analysed within a postcolonial context through case studies. In addition significant issues such as censorship, press freedom, the development of values through the media, propaganda and globalisation will be examined in detail.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Construct a media profile related to a particular Asian country.
  2. Indicate the significance of globalisation to the Asian media.
  3. Illustrate a critical awareness of the major issues shaping the Asian media-scape.
  4. Describe the significance of new media and their cultural impact in Asia.

Unit Content

  1. Research writing skills.
  2. Cross-cultural and contemporary issues related to "Asian" identity and equity in the media and the community.
  3. Satellite television, transborder broadcasting and globalisation.
  4. Propaganda and the Asian values debate in East Asia.
  5. The social impact of the media in selected Asian countries and its cross-cultural influences.
  6. The history of the major media forms in India, China, Japan and Indonesia.

Lectures are used to introduce case studies and examples of media in Asia, examined through theoretical concepts. The lectures provide critical information, history and background information, through interactive presentation, including videos and small group discussion.
