Description

Building upon foundations in MTH1101 Vocal Technique and Music 1, students apply their vocal technique in more demanding settings, performing solo and preparing more challenging technical work. The unit incorporates the keyboard into the study of music theory and musicianship, and introduces the International Phonetic Alphabet. The latter facilitates the study of accents and informs vowel and articulation choices and technique in singing.

Prerequisite Rule

Must have passed MTH1101

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Employ a well-supported and legitimate vocal technique in sung material.
  2. Plan and prepare for performance and reflect upon performance work.
  3. Recognise and reproduce relevant concepts in music theory.
  4. Perform simple keyboard repertoire and technical work.
  5. Analyse speech and accent using the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Unit Content

  1. Technical singing lessons.
  2. Group classes in technical voice.
  3. Classes in music theory, aural and keyboard.
  4. Performance Practice class.
  5. Researching repertoire in the library.
