Description

This unit introduces the specialised acting techniques required for screen work in television or film to broadcast standard. Students learn about the specific language and procedures of the film and TV industry, and the associated terminology.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Interpret and articulate industry-specific language and terminology.
  2. Independently prepare and perform a screen test.
  3. Apply screen acting techniques to the development and rehearsal of a scene.
  4. Collaborate effectively with other artists and technicians.

Unit Content

  1. Editing and film styles.
  2. Film and television acting. A large number of exercises and short scripts will be rehearsed, recorded and reviewed with the emphasis on effective, believable film and TV performance.
  3. Film and television protocols and crew structures, roles and responsibilities.
  4. Film and visual language.
  5. Film genre.
  6. Techniques for rapid approaches to achieve believable performances and character.
  7. The conceptualisation and filming of the showreel involves considerable community interaction.
  8. Typically used camera shots and their meaning.
  9. What pictures tell us over and above performance.

Learning Experience

WIL - Simulated work environment

Students are provided with opportunities to use equipment or practice that is standard in industry.

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
