Description

This unit provides pre-service teachers with an introduction to the philosophy, aims and objectives of music education in primary schools. Students will be provided with the opportunity to explore developmental principles, pedagogies and teaching methods for children in the middle and upper primary school years. Music planning incorporating appropriate music education repertoires, resources and technologies will be examined.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Describe the purpose and value of philosophy, aims and objectives of music education in primary schools.
  2. Identify developmental principles, pedagogies and teaching methods for children in the middle and upper primary school years.
  3. Plan and assess music learning experiences for children in the middle and upper primary years.
  4. Critical examination of music repertoires, resources and technologies.

  1. Philosophy, aims and objectives of music education in primary school.
  2. Developmental principles, pedagogies and teaching methods for children in the middle and upper primary school years.
  3. Contemporary curriculum documents pertaining to planning and assessment of music education in middle and upper primary school years.
  4. Application of music repertoires, resources and technologies for supporting and enhancing musical development and experiences.

Seminars, practical activities, discussions and/or online learning activities.
