This unit provides pre-service teachers with an introduction to the philosophy, aims and objectives of music education in primary schools. Students will be provided with the opportunity to explore developmental principles, pedagogies and teaching methods for children in the middle and upper primary school years. Music planning incorporating appropriate music education repertoires, resources and technologies will be examined.
On completion of this unit students should be able to:

This unit supports pre-service educators who wish to develop specialist knowledge for teaching music to children in years 3 to 6. Through active learning experiences, students will have the opportunity to examine strategies for developing sequential learning experiences in the middle and upper primary years using developmentally appropriate musical material. Peer-teaching experiences and engagement with contemporary literature will support this work.
