Description

This unit provides pre-service teachers with an opportunity to research and critically analyse the aims and objectives of music education in primary schools. Based on critical self-reflection and researched theories students will create their own philosophical approaches to the teaching of music. Students will be provided with the opportunity to research and apply developmental principles, pedagogies and teaching methods suitable for children in the middle and upper primary school years. Music planning incorporating appropriate music education repertoires, resources, digital and other technologies will be critically examined.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically self-reflect and report on personal philosophical approaches to music education in primary schools.
  2. Synthesise developmental principles, pedagogies and teaching methods to create meaningful music learning experiences for children in the middle and upper primary school years.
  3. Critically analyse digital music resources appropriate for children in the middle and upper primary years.
  4. Critically analyse the use of appropriate repertoires, resources and technologies.
  5. Develop authentic programs of learning in the Arts (Music) with strategies for continuous assessment and reporting.

  1. Philosophy, aims and objectives of music education in primary school.
  2. Developmental principles, pedagogies and teaching methods for children in the middle and upper primary school years.
  3. Contemporary curriculum documents pertaining to planning and assessment of music education in middle and upper primary school years.
  4. Applications of music repertoires, resources and technologies for supporting and enhancing musical development and experiences.
  5. Strategies for planning, assessing and reflection using current state and national frameworks.

Description

This unit supports pre-service educators who wish to develop specialist knowledge for teaching music to children in years 3 to 6. Through active learning experiences, students will have the opportunity to evaluate strategies for developing sequential learning experiences in the middle and upper primary years using developmentally appropriate musical material. Critical analysis and reflection of peer-teaching and contemporary literature will support this work.

Prerequisite Rule

Must have passed or be enrolled in MUE6270, or permission required.

Co-Requisite Rule

Must have passed or be enrolled in MUE6270.
