Description

This unit aims to identify foundational instrumental, improvisational, interpretive and technical skills. Repertoire from the swing era and mainstream styles will be studied and the students will begin to build a practice routine and performance repertoire. This unit will also focus on individual performance skills with an emphasis on presentation.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Develop an Ensemble repertoire from the Swing and Mainstream Eras.
  2. Establish a regular practice routine.
  3. Establish acceptable progress in foundational instrumental techniques on the students principal instrument.
  4. Establish the skills required to evaluate musical performances.
  5. Recognise the technical and interactive skills required to create improvised solos in an appropriate context.

Unit Content

  1. Basic jazz stylistic concepts, techniques and interaction methods.
  2. Basic scales and arpeggios.
  3. Basic sight-reading exercises.
  4. Ensemble core repertoire Swing and Mainstream Jazz standards.
  5. Foundational practice and time management strategies.
  6. Performance presentation from a practical and critical perspective.
