This unit aims to identify foundational instrumental, improvisational, interpretive and technical skills. Repertoire from the swing era and mainstream styles will be studied and the students will begin to build a practice routine and performance repertoire. This unit will also focus on individual performance skills with an emphasis on presentation.

In this unit, students design effective practice routines and build their repertoire through lessons and workshops and concert practice classes. Dialogue, discussion and feedback build critical self-awareness, helping students to define their own musical personality. Skills in performance and essential musicianship are introduced and developed.
