Description

This unit aims to develop foundational instrumental, improvisational, interpretative and technical skills. Students will begin to develop a practice and performance repertoire based on the swing era and mainstream styles. The unit will focus on both individual and group performance skills with an emphasis on presentation.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Identify and define musical performances from the swing era and mainstream styles.
  2. Identify the basic roles of the students instrument in the Jazz Ensemble.
  3. Memorise core repertoire from the swing era and mainstream styles.
  4. Perform in a small ensemble and solo setting.
  5. Recognise the skills required to create effective improvised solos by recalling theoretical concepts studied.

Unit Content

  1. Basic improvisation and interaction methods.
  2. Core repertoire Jazz standards from swing era.
  3. Interpreting the aesthetic techniques appropriate to the swing era and mainstream styles.
  4. Performance presentation from a practical and critical perspective.
  5. Rehearsal conventions and instrumental roles.
