Description
This unit focuses on the development of Jazz from 1942 to 1959, concentrating on the major musical innovations, definitive stylistic characteristics, external musical influences and seminal Jazz artists from the period. The unit will examine the body of recorded work associated with the period in conjunction with the relevant literature.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
- Articulate the musical and historical events that influenced Jazz from 1942 to 1959.
- Aurally recognise the definitive Jazz styles from 1942 to 1959.
- Demonstrate research skills.

- Hard Bop and Funky Jazz.
- John Coltrane, his early career.
- Miles Davis first quintet.
- Post Bop artists.
- The beginning of Bebop.
- The birth of the Cool School.
- Wes Montgomery, Charles Mingus and Max Roach.
